Knightfall: play Stockfish and get coached by on-device AI
Knightfall pairs the Stockfish chess engine with Gemma 4 coaching, plus online play, a web version, puzzles and rating tracking.

Playing a strong engine is a good way to lose a lot of chess games. It is not always a good way to learn, because the engine never tells you why your move was bad. Knightfall puts a coach next to the engine: you play against Stockfish, and an AI model, Gemma 4, explains your games and suggests where to improve.
What it does
- Play Stockfish at any difficulty. From beginner to grandmaster level, with adaptive AI that the listing says learns with you.
- AI coaching. Gemma 4 analyzes your games, gives personalized move suggestions, offers opening and endgame tips, and walks through post-game analysis with explanations. The listing describes this coaching as on-device.
- More ways to play. Online multiplayer matches, a local two-player mode on one device, and a web version you can play without downloading anything.
- Progress tracking. Rating history and statistics, win, loss and draw tracking, an opening repertoire builder, and a puzzle mode for tactics training.
- Custom games. Custom time controls and a tournament mode.
- Looks. A clean board, multiple themes and piece sets, animations and sound effects, and dark mode.
Engine and coach: two different jobs
Stockfish is a well-known open chess engine: it calculates moves and is very strong at it. A language model like Gemma 4 does something else, which is putting ideas into words. Knightfall uses each for what it is good at. The engine is your opponent at whatever level you set, and the coach turns your finished game into explanations you can read.
A practical loop looks like this:
- Play a game against Stockfish at a level where you win some and lose some.
- Open the post-game analysis and read the explanations for the moves that mattered.
- Look at the opening and endgame tips that come out of your games.
- Spend a few minutes in puzzle mode to drill tactics.
- Watch your rating history to see whether it is working.
Playing across devices
The Android app has the full feature set, and there is a web version for desktop. The listing mentions cloud save across devices, so you can move between phone and computer. When you want a human opponent, there is online multiplayer, or local two-player mode for passing one phone across a table.
