The problem it solves
A lot of desks still back up to a spinning USB hard drive: slow, heavy, and one bad drop away from losing everything on it. A portable SSD has no moving parts, so it is faster and much harder to break in a bag.
What it is
- Solid-state, no moving parts
- USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2
- Read speeds up to 1050 MB/s (SanDisk's figure)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance
- 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection
- Pocket-size, with a carabiner loop to clip it to a bag
- Also sold in 1TB and 4TB
Where it fits
- The "1" in 3-2-1: a copy of your photos, documents or VM backups that lives somewhere other than the machine it came from.
- Moving big files: a full laptop image or a stack of VM exports in minutes instead of an evening.
- Travel: a backup copy that rides along without worrying about bumps.
What it does not do
One drive is not a backup strategy on its own. If it is your only copy, it is a single point of failure like any other disk. Keep at least one more copy somewhere else, and test a restore now and then. The book Never Lose Your Data walks through the whole 3-2-1 setup.
