Most face shape tools work the same way: you upload a selfie to someone's server and get a verdict back. Some want an account first, a few put the answer behind a paywall, and almost none tell you why they picked "oval". Shape & Shade is a new Android app from Hartmann Studios that does the whole thing on your phone and shows its work.
How a scan works
Tap Find my face shape, fit your face in the oval and take a photo, or pick one you already have (the system Photo Picker, so the app needs no storage permission). On-device AI, Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, finds 478 points on your face. That model ships inside the app, so the scan doesn't need a server.
From those points the app measures four things: forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width and face length. The face shape decision is plain math on those ratios, not a black box: the app compares your proportions with six reference shapes (oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong) and picks the closest one. If you're close to two, it says so, for example "between heart and oval".
What you get
- Your shape, with the reason. The measurement lines are drawn on your photo, with a "Why this shape" note in plain language, such as "Your forehead is wider than your jaw" and "Your chin is narrow".
- Guides for your shape. Hairstyles, glasses frames, brows, beard and contour ideas. The top three in each category are free.
- History. Your scans stay on your phone, and one tap in Settings deletes all of them.
Pro
Pro adds a Color Season scan (hold a white sheet of paper for white balance, in daylight; you get one of 12 seasons, a palette, and colors to skip), live drape (colors tinted under your chin on camera, two side by side), glasses try-on, the full guides, unlimited history and no ads. Color season is for fun and style ideas, not a rule.
What it never does
It never rates how you look. There are no beauty scores, no attractiveness numbers, and no guessing at age, ethnicity or gender. Face shape is an estimate from your measurements.
Privacy
Your selfie stays on your phone. There's no account and no upload. The free version shows ads (Google's consent form is in Settings, under Privacy choices).
