Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Nightsay: Snore & Sleep Talk app ("Nightsay", "the app") uses, why, and the choices you have. Nightsay is published on Google Play by Hartmann Studios ("we", "us"). If you have questions, open an issue on GitHub.
Microphone and your recordings
- When the microphone is used: only after you tap Start, and only until you tap Stop. While recording, Android shows a persistent notification and the microphone indicator. The app asks for the microphone permission before the first recording; you can revoke it at any time in Android Settings.
- What is kept: the app listens continuously while recording, but keeps only short audio clips around detected sounds (such as snoring, talking, coughing or loud noises). The rest of the audio is discarded and is never written to storage.
- On-device processing: sounds are classified by Google's YAMNet audio model, which runs entirely on your phone through Google's MediaPipe library. No audio is sent to us, to Google, or to anyone else for analysis.
- On-device storage: clips and night data (start and end times, detected sound types, timestamps, confidence levels, your Sleep Score and Snore Score, any transcripts, tags and saved AI summaries) are stored in the app's private storage on your phone. Audio clips are excluded from Android cloud backups and device-to-device transfers. See Android Auto Backup for what Android may back up to your own Google account.
- Sharing is up to you: a clip leaves your phone only if you use the Share clip feature yourself (Premium) and choose an app to send it with. The same applies to share cards and highlight reels (see Share cards and the weekly highlight reel). Whatever you share is then handled by the app or person you shared it with.
- Other people in the room: the app can pick up the voices of anyone near your phone. Please let people who sleep near you know you are recording.
Transcribe and translate (Premium)
If you use Transcribe on a sleep-talk clip, the words are recognized by your phone's on-device speech recognizer (Android 13 or later) and stored with that night on your phone. Translation uses Google's ML Kit on-device translation; the language pack is downloaded once through Google Play services, and the text you translate stays on your phone. Nightsay does not send clips or transcripts to us or to a cloud speech service.
On-device AI sleep summaries
Version 1.1 can write a short summary of your night (and, with Premium, a weekly story) using an AI model that runs on your phone. Which one you get depends on your phone:
- Gemini Nano: on phones whose Android system offers Google's Gemini Nano through AICore, the app uses it. It runs on the phone; nothing is sent to us or to Google for this. Android manages Gemini Nano itself, including any download or update of it.
- Downloadable model (Qwen2.5 1.5B Instruct): on other capable phones (64-bit, 6 GB of RAM or more, and enough free storage), you can download the open Qwen2.5 1.5B Instruct model (Apache 2.0 license, by the Qwen team) one time from huggingface.co, in a version prepared for phones (about 1.6 GB). Like any download, Hugging Face's servers see the request, including your IP address and your device's user agent; Hugging Face handles that under its privacy policy. Nothing about you or your nights is sent with the download. The file is checked against a fixed SHA-256 fingerprint before use, and after that the model runs entirely on your phone, offline. On first use the app also creates a cache file of about the same size on the phone so the model loads faster.
- Smart insights: phones that can't run a model get rule-based "Smart insights" computed on the phone, with no download. Only text produced by an on-device model is labelled AI.
What goes into the model: the night's numbers only (for example your scores, time in bed, and the count and times of snores, talking and coughs). No audio and no transcripts are given to the model. The text it writes is saved on your phone with that night.
Deleting the model: Settings → Delete model removes the downloaded model and its cache from your phone. You can download it again later.
Accuracy: AI text is generated automatically and can be wrong. It is for wellness and fun, not medical advice.
Tags, experiments, streaks, badges and reminders
Nightly tags (such as coffee, drinks or a workout), tag patterns, 3-night snore experiments, streaks and badges are stored and calculated on your phone only. Patterns show what lines up with your scores; they are not causes. The optional bedtime reminder is a local notification scheduled on your phone (Android may ask you to allow notifications); no reminder data leaves your phone.
Home-screen widgets
Nightsay's widgets show last night's score and Doze, the app's animated moon mascot, and let you start or stop listening from your home screen. Widgets read the data already on your phone; anyone who can see your home screen can see what the widget shows. Starting from a widget opens Nightsay and starts the same recording service, with its notification.
Share cards and the weekly highlight reel
- Share cards: you can turn a night or a week into an image (PNG) showing your scores, Snore Score, time in bed, sound counts and Doze, and share it through Android's share sheet. The card has no audio. A sleep-talk quote appears on a card only if you switch it on for that card. The image is created on your phone and is sent only to the app you pick.
- Weekly highlight reel: Nightsay can make a short video (MP4) on your phone from your own sleep-talk clips of the week. The app shows a privacy warning first, because the reel contains real audio of you and possibly others in the room. Captions (transcripts) are off by default. The reel is never shared automatically; it leaves your phone only if you tap Share and choose an app.
Backup and restore (export files)
You can export all your nights as one .zip file through Android's file picker, and save it to your phone, Google Drive or any cloud app you choose. It contains your night data (scores, stats, transcripts, tags and settings) and, if you choose (a Premium option), your recordings. We never receive this file: it is handled by the storage location you picked, under that provider's terms. Restore reads a Nightsay backup file you select and replaces the nights on your phone with the ones in the file. Keep backup files somewhere safe, because anyone with the file can open it.
Android Auto Backup
If you have device backup turned on, Android backs up some of the app's data to your own Google account (and copies it during a device-to-device transfer): the nights database (night data, scores, transcripts, tags and any Wear OS readings), the app's settings, badges and saved AI summaries. Recordings, the downloaded AI model, ad-consent files and widget layouts are excluded. This backup is made and stored by Google under your Google account; we cannot access it. You can turn it off in Android Settings (System → Backup, wording varies by phone) and delete it from your Google account's backup settings.
Health Connect (optional)
Health Connect is off by default. If you turn it on in Nightsay and grant permission, each night you record is written to Health Connect on your phone as a sleep session (start and end time only). Nightsay asks only for permission to write sleep data and reads nothing from Health Connect. Data written there is managed by Health Connect, and other apps you allow in Health Connect can read it. Turning the setting off stops new writes; sleep sessions already written stay in Health Connect until you delete them there. You can remove Nightsay's permission in Health Connect at any time. Data from Health Connect is never used for advertising, and Nightsay's use of it follows the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The free version shows ads from Google AdMob on the results and history screens. Ads are never shown while recording. To show and measure ads, the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects and shares with Google:
- your device's advertising ID and other device identifiers;
- IP address (which can indicate approximate location), device model, operating system and app information;
- ad interactions (for example, ad views and taps) and diagnostic data about ad performance.
Google uses this information as described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. AdMob never receives your recordings, night data, AI summaries, Health Connect data or watch sensor data.
Your choices: you can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalized ads, in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads (on some devices: Settings → Google → Ads). You can also manage ad personalization at My Ad Center. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent through Google's consent message before personalized ads are shown, and you can change your choice later; clearing the app's storage also resets it so the consent message appears again. Buying Premium removes ads.
Purchases (Google Play Billing)
Premium is sold through Google Play Billing. Google processes your payment; we never receive your card number or billing details. Google provides the app with the purchase status (such as which plan is active and a purchase token) so the app can unlock Premium on your device. Google's handling of payment information is covered by the Google Privacy Policy and the Google Payments Privacy Notice.
Wear OS companion app
The optional Nightsay app for Wear OS lets you start and stop recording from your watch (including from a watch tile) and shows live status. It does not record audio.
- Optional sensor data: if you allow it, while a night is being recorded the watch app reads your heart rate (one reading per minute, with the sensor switched on briefly each minute) and a per-minute movement level from the watch's accelerometer. The watch asks for the heart rate permission first (Body sensors, or Heart rate on newer Wear OS versions). Without it, the watch app still works as a remote control.
- Why: to show your overnight heart rate and movement next to that night's sounds in the morning report. This is for wellness and entertainment only and is not medical information.
- Where it goes: the readings are kept on the watch during the night and sent directly to the Nightsay app on your paired phone over the Wear OS connection between your devices (Google's Wearable Data Layer), where they are stored with your night data. They are never uploaded to us or to anyone else, never shared with advertisers, and never used for ads. The watch app is excluded from Android backup.
- Deleting it: on the free version, readings older than your last 3 nights are deleted automatically. Clearing the phone app's storage or uninstalling Nightsay deletes all of them. You can stop sensor access at any time by turning off the permission on your watch (Settings → Apps → Nightsay → Permissions).
What we do not collect
- We do not receive, store or listen to your audio recordings, and we never receive heart rate or movement data from the Wear OS app.
- We do not receive your night data, transcripts, tags, AI summaries, backup files, share cards, reels or Health Connect data. AI summaries are generated on your phone.
- We do not require or create an account, and we do not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos or precise location through the app.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Support requests are handled through GitHub Issues. Issues are public and are hosted by GitHub under GitHub's privacy statement, so please don't include personal information, recordings or purchase details in an issue. We use what you post only to answer it, and you can ask us to delete an issue you opened.
Security
Your recordings stay in the app's private storage, which other apps cannot read. Communication between the app and Google's ad and billing services, and the one-time model download from Hugging Face, is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS), and the downloaded model is checked by its SHA-256 fingerprint. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so please keep your phone protected with a screen lock.
Data retention and deletion
- On the free version, the app keeps your last 3 nights and automatically deletes older nights and their clips. With Premium, nights are kept until you delete them.
- You can delete any single clip or an entire night inside the app at any time. Deleting removes it from your phone immediately.
- Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android Settings → Apps → Nightsay → Storage → Clear storage, deletes all of your recordings and night data.
- The downloaded AI model and its cache stay on your phone until you delete them (Settings → Delete model) or uninstall the app.
- Exported backup files are your own files and stay wherever you saved them until you delete them. Sleep sessions written to Health Connect stay there until you delete them in Health Connect. Android Auto Backup copies are kept in your Google account under Google's backup settings.
- Because we never receive your recordings or night data, there is nothing on our side to delete. Data collected by Google AdMob is retained by Google under its own policies.
More detail is on our data deletion page.
Children
Nightsay is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information (for example, in a support issue), open an issue on GitHub without including the information itself and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR in Europe or state privacy laws in the United States such as California's CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information, or to object to or limit certain processing. Most data the app uses never leaves your phone and is under your control there. For anything else, open an issue on GitHub (please don't post personal data publicly; describe your request and we will follow up) and we will respond within 30 days. For data held by Google, use the tools linked above.
Not a medical device
Nightsay is for entertainment and wellness only. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat or monitor any condition. Scores, Smart insights and AI summaries are not medical information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the effective date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
