Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Fieldkey: Plant Rock Coin ID app ("Fieldkey", "the app") uses, why, and the choices you have. Fieldkey is published on Google Play by Hartmann Studios ("we", "us"). If you have questions, open an issue on GitHub.
Camera, photos and on-device identification
- Camera: the app uses your camera to take the photo you want identified. Android asks for camera permission, and you can turn it off at any time in Android Settings.
- On-device processing: identification runs entirely on your phone, using models that ship inside the app (a plant classifier from Google's AIY project and our own plant, rock and coin models). For coins, the app also reads the year and mint mark from the photo on your phone.
- No uploads: your photos are never sent to us, to Google or to anyone else for identification. The app identifies offline.
- Sharing is up to you: a photo or find card leaves your phone only if you share it yourself. It then goes wherever you send it and is handled by that app or person.
What is stored on your phone
The following is stored only on your phone, in the app's private storage:
- photos of finds you save to your collection;
- your saved finds (the result, the date) and the notes you add;
- a cache of your Pro status (entitlement), so Pro works offline;
- your settings.
Other apps cannot read the app's private storage. If you use Pro's collection export, the exported file goes where you choose to save or send it.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The free version shows ads from Google AdMob: banner ads on the collection, settings and result screens; an occasional full-screen ad after you save or share a result; and an optional rewarded video you can choose to watch for one extra identification. Ads are never shown on the camera screen or the upgrade (paywall) screen. Pro has no ads.
To show and measure ads, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may collect and share with Google:
- your device's advertising ID and other device identifiers;
- your IP address, which can indicate your approximate (coarse) location, along with device and app information;
- ad interactions, such as ad views and taps, and diagnostic data about ad performance.
Google uses this information as described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. AdMob never receives your photos, finds or notes.
Consent and choices: where the law requires it (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), the app shows Google's consent form (User Messaging Platform) before personalized ads are shown. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalized ads, in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads (on some phones: Settings → Google → Ads), and manage ad personalization at My Ad Center.
Purchases (Google Play Billing)
Pro (monthly, yearly or lifetime) is sold through Google Play Billing. Google processes your payment; we never receive your card number or billing details. Google tells the app which plan is active (with a purchase token) so the app can unlock Pro on your phone. Google's handling of payment information is covered by the Google Privacy Policy and the Google Payments Privacy Notice.
What we do not collect
- We do not receive or store your photos, finds or notes.
- There is no account: we don't collect your name, email address or contacts through the app.
- The app contains no analytics SDK, and we run no servers that receive data from it.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Support requests are handled through GitHub Issues. Issues are public and hosted by GitHub under GitHub's privacy statement, so please don't include personal information, precise locations or purchase details in an issue. We use what you post only to answer it, and you can ask us to delete an issue you opened.
Security
Your finds stay in the app's private storage, which other apps cannot read. Communication between the app and Google's ad and billing services is encrypted in transit. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so please protect your phone with a screen lock.
Data retention and deletion
- Your finds, notes and settings stay on your phone until you delete them.
- Delete everything at once in the app: Settings → Delete all data. It is removed from your phone immediately.
- Uninstalling the app also deletes all of its data from your phone.
- Because we never receive your photos or finds, there is nothing on our side to delete. Data collected by Google AdMob is kept by Google under its own policies.
- Deleting data does not cancel a subscription. Cancel Pro in the Google Play Store app.
More detail is on our data deletion page.
Children
Fieldkey is intended for users aged 13 and older. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information (for example, in a support issue), open an issue on GitHub without including the information itself and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe, or US state privacy laws such as California's CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information, or to object to or limit certain processing. Your photos, finds and notes never leave your phone and are under your control there. For anything else, open an issue on GitHub (please don't post personal data publicly; describe your request and we will follow up). For data collected by Google AdMob or Google Play, you can also use Google's own tools at myaccount.google.com.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
