TipsyBuddy: track drinks, estimate BAC and get home safe

A night out goes better when you have a rough idea of where you stand: how many drinks, how much you have spent, and whether your friends know where you are. Counting in your head stops working after the second round. TipsyBuddy is a night-out companion that keeps that count for you, gives you an estimate of your blood alcohol content, and makes getting home safely a one-tap job.

One thing first, because the app itself puts it front and center: every number TipsyBuddy shows is an estimate for informational and harm-reduction purposes. It is not a breathalyzer, and it is never a reason to drive.

What it does

  • Quick drink logging. One-tap buttons for beer, wine, cocktails, shots and water, plus custom drinks with your own ABV, volume and cost.
  • Estimated BAC and sober countdown. A gauge based on your profile, color-coded zones (Sober, Buzzed, Tipsy, Elevated) and a timer showing roughly when you will feel back to baseline.
  • Running tab. A drink counter and a spending total, so the end-of-night bill is not a surprise.
  • Hydration nudges. Water reminders between alcoholic drinks, a next-day hangover risk score with recovery advice, and hydration tips before bed.
  • Live location sharing. Send friends a live map link that lasts from 30 minutes up to 4 hours.
  • Rides and emergency dialing. One-tap Uber or Lyft to your current location, speed dial for a trusted contact or local emergency services, and easy address copy for a designated driver.
  • History and trends. A monthly calendar of light, moderate, heavy and sober days, sober streaks and monthly spending.
  • Wear OS companion. BAC estimate, countdown and quick-add drinks on your watch.

How the estimate works

TipsyBuddy uses the Widmark formula, a standard physiological formula, with the profile you enter. The listing is clear about its limits: metabolism varies a lot with food, hydration, medications, fatigue and individual biology. Treat the gauge as a pacing aid, a reason to have a water or call it a night, not as a measurement.

Sharing your night

The live link is designed to be easy for the people you send it to. Friends open it in any browser, on any phone or PC, with no app download or sign-up. They can see your live location, your venue check-in and your phone's battery level. The link only works for whoever you send it to and expires on its own.

Privacy

According to the listing, your drinks, spending and health data stay on your device, and the monthly statistics are private on-device statistics. Location sharing is opt-in, reachable only through the unique link you share, and it expires automatically.

Good to know

  • Price: free to download, with ads.
  • Subscription: an optional ad-free subscription removes banners and interstitials. You manage or cancel it through Google Play subscriptions.
  • Rating: Mature 17+, in the Food & Drink category.
  • Safety notice from the app: estimates are for informational and harm-reduction purposes only. Never drink and drive. Always use a designated driver, taxi or rideshare. If you or someone near you needs urgent medical care, call your local emergency services immediately.

Is it for you?

  • You want a quick way to count drinks and see what the night is costing.
  • You like a gentle nudge to drink water between rounds.
  • You want friends to be able to follow you home on a live map without installing anything.
  • You understand the BAC number is an estimate and plan your ride home regardless.
